Overview

inDART-HC08/D is a powerful entry-level tool for Freescale HC08-based systems. inDART-HC08/D takes advantage of the Metrowerks CodeWarrior Integrated Development Environment (which groups an Editor, Assembler, C Compiler and Debugger) and the Freescale's MON08 interface, which allows the download of the user application into the microcontroller FLASH memory. Together with CodeWarrior, inDART-HC08/D provides you with everything you need to write, compile, download, in-circuit emulate and debug user code. Full-speed program execution allows you to perform hardware and software testing in real time. inDART-HC08/D is connected to (and powered by) the host PC through a USB connection.

What is In-System Programming (ISP)?

The ISP feature allows you to update the content of the FLASH program memory when the chip is already plugged on the application board. The ISP feature can be implemented with a minimum number of added components and board area impact. inDART-HC08 uses a standard, 16-pin ISP connector (MON08-compatible) to program the target device.

The CodeWarrior Development Studio for Freescale HC08 Microcontrollers enables you to build and deploy HC08 systems quickly and easily. This tool suite provides the capabilities required by every engineer in the development cycle, from board bring-up to firmware development to final application development. With a common, project-based, development environment reuse becomes a natural by-product as each team builds on the work already completed by the previous team. CodeWarrior Development Studio for HC08 Microcontrollers, Special Edition, includes the CodeWarrior integrated development environment (IDE); 4 KB code-size limited C compiler and C source-level debugger; macro assembler and Assembly-level debugger and FLASH programming support.

Debugging with the Internal Oscillator

inDART-HC08 series tools can take advantage of the internal oscillator present in some HC08 derivatives (QT, QY, QL, QB, QF, KX, GT, etc.) not only when programming the device, but also during application development, allowing the user to use the internal oscillator as the device's clock source. Additionally, inDART-HC08, by using the target device's internal oscillator, allows the external oscillator pins to be freed for user purposes.

Free DataBlaze Programming Utility Included

A full-featured programming utility (DataBlaze) is provided free with inDART-HC08. DataBlaze offers the following advanced features:

  • Code memory editing;
  • Data memory (EEPROM) editing;
  • Blank check/erase/program/verify operations on Code memory and Data memory;
  • Read operations from Code memory and Data memory;
  • Project handling;
  • One-button, multiple-operations programming ("Auto" feature);
  • Serial numbering.

Additionally, DataBlaze is capable of internal oscillator trimming (on devices that include it).

inDART-HC08 series tools are also supported by the Cosmic ZAP debugger


Programming Library (DLL)

The optional IPL-HC08 Programming Library is a DLL which includes all of the low-level functions that allow users to set up the instrument and perform most of the programming commands and functions of the DataBlaze user interface from within their own Windows application. The IPL-HC08 Programming Library contains C written routines, and can be used to interface the instrument from within, for example, a Microsoft Visual C or Visual Basic application, as well as any other programming language that supports the DLL mechanism. The IPL-HC08 Programming Library can be purchased as an accessory to every instrument of the inDART-HC08 series. Full documentation and examples are included. An USB software protection key is provided with every copy of IPL-HC08: the protection key must be plugged into any USB port on the PC where the library functions of IPL-HC08 are used.
