Reference Design![]() ADI Engineerings Shadwell is an advanced network security device reference design that combines the high performance and low power consumption of Intel® XScale technology with a reconfigurable and readily customized hardware offload accelerator in a highly flexible and scalable architecture. Shadwell enables rapid development and deployment of mid to high-end enterprise network security devices including firewalls, VPN equipment, IPSec and SSL accelerators, intrusion detection, high-speed cryptography and virus scanners. Shadwell promotes wirespeed network security performance with its Xilinx® Virtex-II hardware offload engine and software programmable XScale Transport Offload Engine (TOE). The standard one million gate and optional three million gate Virtex-II offload engines can be readily used to implement hardware-offloaded cryptography, firewall or virus filters, and other custom functionality. Massively parallel implementations of such algorithms are readily attainable, providing breakthrough performance levels not possible with other approaches. For example, Shadwell's offload engine can readily enable sustained gigabit Triple DES throughput. Or dozens of firewall or virus filters can be implemented, all operating in parallel to offer an order of magnitude or greater acceleration. Even if the hardware offload is not used, Shadwell helps to enable wirespeed performance with its 733 MHz 80200 XScale processor, single and dual GbE port versions and 64-bit, 66 MHz PCI 2.2 interface.
